Welcome to The Professional Educator, a nationally disseminated, peer-reviewed electronic journal published jointly by Auburn University’s Truman Pierce Institute and the College of Education. The Professional Educator focuses on current issues, research, and innovations related to educational partnerships. Originally a print journal, The Professional Educator has been in existence since the late 1970s. Today, The Professional Educator is published online bi-annually and publishes research, policy, and best practice articles about educational partnerships.

Research has consistently shown that when educators collaborate with others, they are challenged to stretch their thinking and practice and, in most instances, the quality of education provided is improved. The field of education has become increasingly complex, requiring new resources, new ideas, and new ways of engaging with others. When pk–12 practitioners, university educators, community members, business leaders, policy makers, and others work together, our children and schools benefit through the transformational work that occurs.

Experience has taught us how effective we can be when supported by a team of colleagues who are equally invested in the mission of providing high quality, future-oriented educational opportunities for all children, both locally and globally. We know that we are not just one in this mission. We are many. We believe that educational partnerships are the key to building and sustaining schools that effectively help each learner reach beyond his or her potential and to becoming better prepared for the challenges we face both now and in years to come.

Our hope is that the research-based and other articles in this journal will inspire scholarly and collegial discussion among those who are interested in improving the quality of education and educational opportunities for all children. Ultimately, our goal is to generate and support the enthusiasm and momentum necessary to facilitate a culture of continuous improvement in our schools, increase a sense of pride in public education, and offer insights and suggestions for re-energizing the notion that we are all responsible for the education of youth in our communities and beyond.
